LIPACE Expands Second Chance Program to Bong County

The expansion into Fuamah District will provide foundational learning opportunities to 270 out-of-school children across six communities in Lower Bong County.

LIPACE has expanded its Second Chance program into Bong County, extending its foundational learning work to communities in Fuamah District, Lower Bong County, where 270 out-of-school children will have an opportunity to build foundational literacy and numeracy skills and continue their education.

The expansion marks another step in LIPACE’s commitment to reaching children whose education has been delayed, interrupted, or never had the opportunity to begin. Through the program, Second Chance learning classes are being established across six communities in the Bong Mines area: Camp Walking, Garlorwumah, Haindii, New Varney Town, Nyein, and Nyehn.

For children who are out of school, the barriers to education can begin long before they enter a classroom. Poverty, distance, family circumstances, late enrollment, and other challenges can leave children behind their peers or outside the education system altogether.

The Second Chance program provides an accelerated learning pathway for out-of-school children to develop foundational literacy and numeracy skills and prepare for transition into formal education.

In Fuamah District, LIPACE will work closely with communities, parents, local education authorities, and other stakeholders to create an environment in which learners are supported not only to enroll, but also to attend consistently, progress in their learning, and prepare for their next stage of education. The 270 learners reached through the Bong County expansion join thousands of children who have participated in LIPACE-supported foundational learning interventions over the years.

The expansion into Fuamah District is being implemented in collaboration with local education authorities and communities, helping to strengthen local ownership and connect participating children with the wider education system.

Josiah B. Kollie, District Education Officer for Fuamah District, welcomed the expansion of the Second Chance program and expressed the district’s readiness to work with LIPACE to reach children who remain outside the classroom.

We welcome the Second Chance program to Fuamah District and look forward to working with LIPACE to give out-of-school children another opportunity to learn. For children who have missed the chance to begin or continue their education, building strong foundational skills can open the way for them to return to learning and progress in school.

The partnership with local education leadership will help connect the program’s community-level work with the wider education system, particularly as learners build the foundational skills and readiness needed to transition into and continue formal schooling.

For LIPACE, expanding into Bong County is about more than opening new learning spaces. It is about ensuring that children who have missed the opportunity to start school or whose education has been interrupted are not defined by those circumstances.

LIPACE’s experience with foundational learning has shown that the impact of a strong educational foundation can continue long after a learner leaves the program. When children acquire the skills and confidence to continue learning, a second chance can become the beginning of a much longer educational journey.

As classes begin across Fuamah District, the focus will therefore remain on what comes next: helping children develop the literacy and numeracy skills, confidence, and readiness they need to continue their education.

For 270 children in Lower Bong County, that journey now has another chance to begin.
